Monitoring our Electricity Supply
Although our electricity supply is 100% renewable. The less we use, the more there is available for everyone else. Oh and it also costs us less!
Here's the story on what we have done so far.
Electricity Monitoring
We started research energy monitoring back in 2011 when small devices came onto the market that allowed you measure the amount of electricity used bey a single device. Great for checking that your PC is using much less on it's low power settings, but it does not give you an overall feel for electricity usage throughout the day.
We became aware of Owl™ Electrity monitors and when we found the the Intuition-e model, we decided to go ahead and duly purchased one in and set it up in July 2014.
Owl Intuition-e
The Owl Intution-e is a single-phase monitoring solution that transmits usage data to a small receiving unit that you attach to your broadband router. Data is then shipped to Owl data centre and you can see your use via various website pages that are available. Daily data is available for up to 3 months for download (at approx. 6 second intervals) and historic data beyond the last 3 months is accessible at daily / weekly or monthly cuts.
So far we are just using this to construct a benchmark set of figures.
